Stop & Shop, a grocery store staple in the Northeast, has announced plans to close 10 locations across New Jersey. This decision is part of a larger company strategy to streamline operations and focus on growth.
By the end of 2024, a total of 32 Stop & Shops will close across the Northeast, with New Jersey and Massachusetts bearing the brunt of the closures, with 3 out of 10 locations being in NJ.
The closures stem from an evaluation of the company’s store portfolio, with a focus on eliminating “underperforming” locations. Stop & Shop maintains that this move will strengthen their financial standing and position them for future expansion.
For residents of New Jersey, this means losing access to convenient grocery options in their communities. Some of the closing stores have been neighborhood fixtures for years, and residents lament the loss of a familiar shopping experience.
Stop & Shop assured impacted employees that they will be offered opportunities within the company at other locations. The company also maintains a commitment to its remaining stores in New Jersey, with 91 locations still operational throughout the state.
Stop & Shop locations to close by the end of 2024:
- 1083 Inman Ave., Edison
- 1049 US Highway 1 South, Edison
- 4861 US Highway 9, Howell
- 1278 US Highway 22, Phillipsburg
- 581 Stelton Rd., Piscataway
- 625 Paterson Ave., Carlstadt
- 1221 State Route 27, Franklin Township
- 130 Skyline Dr., Ringwood
- 505 Richmond Ave, Point Pleasant Beach
- 2275 West County Line Rd., Jackson
- Number of stores closing in NJ: 10
- Number of stores closing in the Northeast: 32
- Impact on employees: Offered opportunities at other Stop & Shop locations
- Number of Stop & Shop locations remaining in NJ: 91
Stop & Shop currently operates about 350 stores in the Northeast.
While Stop & Shop hopes to become stronger from this strategic move, the closures leave a void in some New Jersey communities as many residents will need to find new grocery shopping options, and employees will have to adjust new work locations.
