Hunterdon County, NJ (July 31, 2024) – A 2.2 magnitude earthquake jolted residents of Hunterdon County awake early this morning at approximately 1:44 AM. The quake, centered about 3 miles east of Califon Borough, had a depth of 4.7 kilometers.
While the tremor caused a brief scare, there have been no reported injuries or significant damage to structures in the area. This latest seismic event follows a series of smaller earthquakes that have occurred in the region since a more substantial 4.8 magnitude quake struck Tewksbury Township in April. Since the 4.8 quake, there have been several aftershocks felt throughout the state with the epicenter in North Jersey.
While earthquakes are uncommon in New Jersey, experts suggest that the recent activity may be a series of aftershocks related to the April event. Residents are encouraged to remain calm and prepared, but there is no immediate cause for alarm. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed.
NJ residents had another surprise a few weeks ago when many heard, and in some cases, felt a mysterious loud boom a few weeks ago. The common consensus for the boom was a fireball, or a meteor entering the atmosphere at 38,000 mph, and disintegrating 20 miles above Manhattan. No fragments were found. And like the earthquake, it was gone as quickly as it came.
