Bridgeton, NJ – A woman was caught on camera jumping the fence at a Cumberland County Zoo in Bridgeton and attempting to touch a 500-pound Bengal tiger. Police are asking the public for help in identifying her
According to the Bridgeton Police Department and their post on Facebook, while at the Cohanzick Zoo, a woman managed to bypass the security barriers and climb the fence to enter the tiger enclosure that housed the Bengal tigers, Rishi and Mahesha. Witnesses reported seeing her approach the tiger and attempt to pet it.
The unidentified woman put her hand through the fence and the tiger reacted by attempting to bite her hand causing her to jump back. The Bengal, was likely startled by the unexpected intrusion and may have posed a significant threat.
Despite warnings outside of the enclosure, “Do not climb over the fence. Climbing over any zoo fence is against city ordinance 247-C”, woman was undeterred.
The Cohanzick Zoo in Cumberland County is a popular tourist destination known for its diverse collection of animals and educational exhibits. The two tigers are brothers who arrived at the zoo in 2016 as cubs.
John Medica, Director of Recreation and Public Affairs for the City of Bridgeton, told PEOPLE in a statement: “The high quality care of the animals, along with the safety of our guests and visitors, is our top priority. Any visitor behavior that places the animals, staff and members of the public in a potentially dangerous situation is unacceptable and will be addressed accordingly.”
The woman was also observed at the bear exhibit attempting the same song and dance but staff were able to intervene in time to stop her.
Medica continued: “It was just very careless, a very careless action, and you know, I hope the individual recognizes how lucky they were to still have all of their limbs.”
