Morristown, New Jersey – Morristown was overrun this weekend as thousands of hopeful actors and Adam Sandler fans descended upon the local community center for a surprise casting call for “Happy Gilmore 2.”
The impromptu audition, announced just days ago via social media, drew aspiring actors from across the tri-state area and beyond. By early Saturday morning, the line of eager participants stretched for several blocks, with some camping out overnight to secure a spot. It’s estimated that around 12,000 people converged to audition for background roles in the movie.
“I drove 12 hours from Ohio as soon as I heard,” said Mike Johnson, 28, sporting a homemade Shooter McGavin costume. “Happy Gilmore is my all-time favorite movie. I just had to be here.”
Local officials were caught off guard by the massive turnout. Mahwah Mayor James Wysocki stated, “We’re used to some busy days, but nothing like this. It’s like the whole town turned into a giant golf course parking lot overnight.”
The casting call was reportedly scheduled from 1 to 8 p.m but hopeful participants arrived earlier to gain an edge. That didn’t help the early birds as comments via social media said they were waiting to be seen for hours.
While details about the sequel remain scarce, rumors suggest the plot will follow an older Happy Gilmore as he mentors a new generation of unconventional golfers. Casting directors were reportedly looking for a mix of comedic talent and athletic ability.
The event wasn’t without its share of chaos. Local police had to be called in to manage traffic and crowd control. Meanwhile, enterprising residents set up impromptu refreshment stands to cater to the crowds, selling everything from bottled water to “Shooter’s Shooters” energy drinks.
Adam Sandler himself made a surprise appearance late in the afternoon, sending the crowd into a frenzy. He thanked everyone for coming out and joked, “If I’d known golf was this popular in Jersey, I would’ve set the first movie here!”
As the sun set, casting directors had seen thousands of hopefuls, but remained tight-lipped about any potential discoveries. Regardless of the outcome, the day will go down in local lore as the time when Hollywood came calling, and New Jersey answered with a resounding “It’s all in the hips!”
