Sandy Hook, NJ – A New York City man’s swim in Queens took an unexpected turn on Monday morning when he found himself swept away by the current and ending up in neighboring New Jersey.
The lucky swimmer, 34-year-old Pete Ordane, told authorities he believes he entered the water near Breezy Point in Queens. Ordane wasn’t able to fight the strong currents and ended up far from shore. His determination kept him afloat, as he treaded water for what must have felt like an eternity.
Middletown Township police received a call around 9 a.m. from a commercial fisherman who pulled Ordane out of the water, and brought him on board his boat.
The two spotted Ordane roughly two miles off the coast of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and they brought Ordane aboard their vessel and transported him to safety to the Monmouth Cove Marina in Port Monmouth.
Despite his ordeal, Ordane was evaluated by first responders and found to be in good condition. He was provided with dry clothes, some food, and helped arrange his transportation back to New York City.
Middletown Township police credit the fisherman and his son with saving Ordane’s life. They said in a statement: “The Middletown Police commend the man and his son, who reside in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown and wish to remain anonymous, for taking such valiant actions and undoubtedly saving Ordane’s life.”
